Slay the Spire 2 Ascension Levels

Ascension is Slay the Spire 2's difficulty system — 10 levels of stacking modifiers that make every run progressively harder. Each level adds a new permanent penalty on top of all previous ones, and progress is tracked separately per character.

Quick Answer

There are 10 Ascension levels in Slay the Spire 2 (Early Access). Unlock them by completing full runs with each character. Modifiers stack — at Ascension 10, all 10 penalties are active at once.

How to Unlock Ascension Levels

Solo Mode

Complete a full run with a character to earn one Ascension level for that character. Progress is per-character — Ascension 5 on the Regent does nothing for the Necrobinder.

Co-op Mode

Co-op Ascension is tracked separately from solo. Clearing a level unlocks the next one for all characters in the lobby — no per-character grind. The catch: the lobby is capped at the lowest player's Ascension level.

Biggest Difficulty Spikes

Ascension 5 — Ascender's Bane

A Curse in your starting deck is a dead draw every time it appears. Deck thinning (removing Strikes and Defends at shops) becomes priority one to dilute its impact.

Ascension 6 — Gloom

Fewer Rest Sites means less healing and fewer upgrade opportunities. You need to enter fights healthier and make every upgrade count.

Ascension 7 — Scarcity

Combined with Ascension 5's Curse, you're drawing dead cards more often while finding fewer powerful upgrades to compensate. Build around what you get, not what you want.

Ascension 10 — Double Boss

The ultimate test. Two Act 3 bosses back-to-back demands a deck capable of sustained output across two full health bars. Burst-only strategies fail here.

Tips for Climbing Efficiently

Pick one character and commit — depth of knowledge with a single class pays off more than spreading runs across five.
Hunt Elites aggressively in Act 1. Ascension 1 spawns more of them, and relics are the only way your passive power scales hard enough for later acts.
Use potions to secure Elite kills without taking massive damage, not as a last resort. Surviving at 40 HP instead of 10 HP means you can upgrade at the next Rest Site.
Deck thinning is mandatory at Ascension 5+. Remove Strikes and Defends at every shop — a tight 20-card deck beats a bloated 35-card deck every time.
At Ascension 10, prepare specifically for two Act 3 bosses. Your deck needs sustained output across two full health bars, not just one explosive turn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Ascension levels are in Slay the Spire 2?

There are currently 10 Ascension levels in the Early Access build of Slay the Spire 2. Each level adds a new permanent modifier that stacks on top of all previous ones.

How do I unlock higher Ascension levels?

Complete a full run with a character to earn one Ascension level for that character. There are no shortcuts — every level requires a successful run.

Are Ascension levels shared between characters?

No. In solo mode, Ascension levels are tracked independently per character. Reaching Ascension 5 with the Regent does nothing for the Necrobinder.

How does Ascension work in co-op?

Co-op Ascension is tracked separately from solo. Progress is universal — clearing a level unlocks the next one for all characters in the lobby. However, the lobby is capped at the lowest player's Ascension level.

Do Ascension modifiers stack?

Yes. All modifiers are cumulative. At Ascension 10, all 10 modifiers are active simultaneously.

Does Custom Mode count toward Ascension progress?

In the current Early Access build, Custom Mode runs do not count toward unlocking higher Ascension levels.
