Slay the Spire 2 — Multiplayer Co-op Guide

Everything you need to know about STS2's 4-player co-op: how many players, how it works, best team compositions, and tips for climbing together.

Quick Answer: Up to 4 players

Slay the Spire 2 supports 1–4 players online via Steam. No local co-op. No public matchmaking — friends-only lobbies. Enemy health scales with party size.

How to Start a Co-op Game

  1. 1.Select Multiplayer from the main menu
  2. 2.Host chooses Host, others choose Join
  3. 3.Invite friends via Steam Overlay (Shift+Tab → Friends List)
  4. 4.Each player selects their character (duplicate classes allowed)
  5. 5.Run starts once all players are ready. The host's connection quality affects everyone — wired ethernet recommended for the host.

Character Roles in Co-op

IroncladTank

Self-heals via Burning Blood. Absorbs damage while teammates scale.

SilentDebuffer

Applies Vulnerable and Weak to amplify all teammates' damage output.

DefectFlexible DPS

Utility via Frost Orbs, passive damage via Lightning. Adapts to team needs.

RegentBurst Dealer

Slow-burn Star accumulation across turns. Delivers high burst damage.

NecrobinderBoard Control

Osty companion and Doom thresholds. Controls the battlefield over time.

Best Team Compositions

The golden rule: diversity prevents relic competition. Avoid running two characters who want the same relic types.

2 Players

The Foundation

IroncladSilent

Tank + Debuffer. The most reliable 2-player foundation. Ironclad survives while Silent's Vulnerable amplifies all damage.

Doom & Burst

NecrobinderRegent

Board control + burst damage. Requires setup turns but delivers massive payoff once Doom and Stars are stacked.

3 Players

Balanced Trio

IroncladSilentRegent

Covers all three roles: tank, debuff, damage. Well-rounded and recommended for new co-op groups.

Control Squad

IroncladSilentNecrobinder

Trades burst for enhanced board control. Better against sustained fights and high-HP enemies.

4 Players

Full Roster

IroncladSilentDefectRegent

Balances all roles without relic competition. Recommended for new groups — each character wants different relics.

Max Damage

IroncladSilentNecrobinderRegent

Maximizes damage output. Higher skill ceiling — requires coordination to protect Necrobinder during Doom setup.

Co-op Strategy Tips

Assign roles before Act 1 — agree on who tanks, who debuffs, who deals damage. This sets card draft priorities.
Silent should prioritize Vulnerable and Weak on turn 1. Teammates focus on defense/setup while debuffs land.
Take Elites early — four players fighting one Elite means four relics distributed, accelerating everyone's power curve.
Coordinate rest site choices: if someone died recently, the highest-HP player takes the Revive penalty; others upgrade cards.
Throw healing potions to the tank. Throw damage buff potions to burst dealers.
Use the map drawing tool to communicate route preferences before voting.
Protect the last standing player — dead players revive after combat, but only if someone survives.
Disable all mods before co-op to prevent desync crashes.
Enable Fast Mode to speed up animations — four players compounds animation time significantly.

Key Differences from Solo Play

What's Different

  • • Enemy health scales with player count
  • • Map paths are voted on democratically
  • • Relics are drafted from a shared pool
  • • Dead players revive after combat (not run-ending)
  • • Co-op exclusive cards and relics available
  • • Revive option at Rest Sites (costs max HP)

What's the Same

  • • Each player has their own deck
  • • Card rewards are individual
  • • Energy and HP are separate per player
  • • Same Acts, bosses, and events
  • • Same win condition (defeat final boss)
  • • Progression and achievements still unlock

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play Slay the Spire 2 co-op?

Up to 4 players. You can also play with 2 or 3 — enemy health scales based on party size so the difficulty stays balanced.

Is there local co-op or couch co-op?

No. Slay the Spire 2 is online-only co-op. There is no split-screen or local multiplayer at Early Access launch.

How do you invite friends to a co-op game?

Use the Steam Overlay (Shift+Tab) → Friends List → right-click a friend → Join Game. Or the host can invite directly from the lobby. There is no public matchmaking — friends-only lobbies only.

Do players share a deck?

No. Each player has their own independent deck, health pool, gold, and potions. You share the map route (voted democratically) and combat encounters.

How does the voting system work?

After clearing a room, all players vote on which map node to take next. Ties are broken randomly by the game. You can draw on the map to communicate your preference to teammates.

How does combat work in multiplayer?

Combat is simultaneous — all players play their cards at the same time against the same enemies. You can see semi-transparent hand cursors showing what teammates are playing in real time.

How are relics distributed in co-op?

After defeating Elites or bosses, a shared draft pool appears with relics equal to player count. Players take turns selecting. If multiple players choose the same relic, the game resolves it with a rock-paper-scissors animation.

What happens when a player dies?

Dead players revive at the end of combat at 1 HP — as long as at least one player survives. A full party wipe ends the run. There's also a co-op exclusive Revive option at Rest Sites where a surviving player sacrifices max HP to restore a downed ally.

Do debuffs affect all players?

Enemy debuffs (Vulnerable, Weak) applied to enemies are shared — if Silent applies Vulnerable, all players deal 50% more damage to that target. Enemy attacks target individual players.

Are there multiplayer-exclusive cards?

Yes. Each character has co-op-only cards designed for team synergy. The most documented example is Beacon of Hope (Rare Colorless Power): when you gain Block, other players receive half that amount. Upgraded version gains Innate.

Can you use mods in co-op?

Technically yes, but all players must have identical Steam Workshop mods in the same load order. Mismatched mods cause desync errors and crash lobbies. Safest approach: disable all mods for co-op.

Is there cross-play?

No cross-play needed — STS2 is currently PC/Steam only (Windows, Mac, Linux, Steam Deck all supported).
