Defect Build Guide

The Defect returns in Slay the Spire 2 with expanded orb mechanics and new build paths. While the Defect can feel complex due to orb management, the Uproar chain build is surprisingly simple and incredibly consistent — making it the best starting point for new Defect players.

Recommended for Beginners: Start with the Uproar build. It's the most consistent Defect archetype and doesn't require complex orb calculations.

Uproar Chain Build

MOST CONSISTENTEasy

The most consistent Defect build. Chain Uproar cards to play massive attack sequences for free, dealing huge damage in a single turn.

How It Works

The Uproar Mechanic

Uproar costs 2 energy and deals 5 damage twice, then plays a random attack from your Draw Pile. If that random attack is another Uproar, it plays for free and chains into another attack. With multiple Uproars in your deck, you can chain 3-5+ attacks in one turn.

Deck Thinning is Critical

Remove EVERY Strike from your deck. Strikes brick your Uproar chains. Once your deck only contains powerful attacks, every Uproar guarantees value. This is the most important rule for this build.

High-Cost Attack Focus

Pick high-cost, high-impact attacks like Meteor Strike, Hyperbeam, and Sunder. You don't want to play them for their full cost — you want Uproar to play them for free. When Meteor Strike is played for free, it generates Plasma orbs for massive energy gains.

Core Cards

Uproar

2 Energy

Deal 5 damage twice. Play a random attack from Draw Pile. Pick every copy you see.

Meteor Strike

5 Energy

Deal 24 damage. Channel 3 Plasma. Insane when played for free.

Sunder

3 Energy

Deal 24 damage. Gain 3 energy next turn. Strong finisher.

Coolheaded

1 Energy

Draw 1 card. Channel 1 Frost. Turn extender.

Overclock

0 Energy

Draw 2 cards. Lose 1 energy next turn. Cycle enabler.

Modded

1 Energy

Draw 3 cards. Exhaust. Massive draw for combo turns.

Avoid These Cards

  • Beam Cell (weak damage)
  • Claw (requires too many copies)
  • Hyper Beam (can ruin Frost orb protection)
  • Any 0-cost attacks (dilute Uproar chains)

Key Relics

Inserter

Gain 1 additional orb slot — more Plasma/Frost active

Capacitor

Gain 2 additional orb slots — massive scaling

Cracked Core

Channel 1 Lightning at combat start — free damage

Frozen Core

Channel 1 Frost at combat start — free Block

Runic Capacitor

Start each combat with 3 Lightning orbs

Pro Tips

  • Remove Strikes ASAP — they're the #1 reason Uproar chains fail
  • Don't play high-cost attacks manually unless desperate — let Uproar play them
  • Meteor Strike generates Plasma when played for free — use Dualcast to convert Plasma to energy
  • Frost orbs handle defense — focus on attack cards for offense
  • Uproar is a COMMON card — you'll see it frequently, making this build reliable
  • Works against all Act 3 bosses — even Doormaker can't escape the chain
🔮

Focus Scaling Build

Medium

Stack Focus to amplify all orb effects. Lightning deals more damage, Frost generates more Block, and Dark orbs store massive burst damage.

Core Cards

Defragment

Gain 1 Focus. The core power for this build.

Loop

At the end of your turn, trigger the passive of your next orb an additional time.

Capacitor

Gain 2 orb slots. More orbs = more scaling.

Darkness

Channel 1 Dark orb. Dark orbs scale with Focus.

Coolheaded

Draw 1 card. Channel 1 Frost. Cycle and defense.

Glacier

Channel 2 Frost. Gain 7 Block. Defensive scaling.

Key Relics

Inserter

Gain 1 additional orb slot

Capacitor

Gain 2 additional orb slots

Frozen Core

Channel 1 Frost at combat start

Runic Pyramid

Don't discard hand at end of turn — hold key cards

Pro Tips

  • Prioritize Defragment — it's the most important card for this build
  • Dark orbs are your burst damage — let them accumulate before evoking
  • Frost orbs scale with Focus — each point of Focus = 1 more Block per turn
  • Expanding orb slots is critical — more slots = more passive effects
  • Loop doubles your orb triggers — insane with high Focus

0-Cost Build

Hard

Fill your deck with 0-cost cards and play your entire hand every turn. Requires specific relics and rare cards to function.

Core Cards

Claw

Deal 3 damage. Gains +3 damage permanently when played.

All For One

Deal 10 damage. Return all 0-cost cards from discard to hand.

Hologram

Return a card from discard to hand. Enables Claw loops.

Scrape

Deal 7 damage. Draw 4 cards. Massive cycle.

Key Relics

Sundial

Every 3 cards played, gain 2 energy — essential for this build

Tingsha

Discarding a card deals 3 damage — synergizes with hand cycling

Pro Tips

  • This build is inconsistent without All For One — don't force it
  • Claw scales permanently — each Claw played buffs all future Claws
  • Requires heavy deck thinning — remove all non-0-cost cards
  • High-risk, high-reward — amazing when it works, terrible when it doesn't

Which Build Should You Choose?

Uproar Build — Best for Consistency

The Uproar build is the most reliable Defect archetype. Uproar is a common card, so you'll see it frequently. The build works against all bosses and doesn't require rare cards or specific relics to function. Perfect for Ascension climbing.

Focus Build — Best for Scaling

Focus builds excel in long fights where orbs can accumulate value. Dark orbs store massive burst damage, while Frost orbs provide scaling defense. Requires Defragment to function properly.

0-Cost Build — High Risk, High Reward

The 0-cost build is inconsistent without All For One and specific relics. Don't force this build unless you get the key cards early. When it works, it's amazing. When it doesn't, it's terrible.

Ancient Boon Recommendations

Certain Ancient boons synergize exceptionally well with Defect builds:

  • Radiant Pearl (Orobas): Extra energy for extending Uproar chains
  • Very Hot Cocoa (Tezcatara): Energy boost for strong first turns
  • Brightest Flame (Tezcatara): Excellent turn extender for combo turns
  • Relax (Pael): Extra turn to find key cards
